Cards
Card magic usually turns on a choice you don't make: a named card, a suit, a number of cards. Practice alone and you make that choice for them, and you tend to pick what your hands already like. This picks instead, so the awkward cards come up as often as the comfortable ones.
What you can draw.

How to practice with it.
- Spin once, then run the effect from the top for whatever came up. No redraws.
- Set Total cards to 5 to rehearse a whole sequence without stopping between draws.
- Use Suit, Red or Black, or Face or Back when the routine turns on a smaller choice.
- Draw a Poker hand to rehearse the patter around a deal. The cards that make the hand are highlighted.
Using a random card in a magic trick.
Plenty of card effects start with a spectator naming or choosing a card. Rehearse alone and the card you'd name for them is the one your routine already likes best. A random draw gives you the card a real spectator might, including the one that makes your patter awkward or your handling harder.
- Draw a card and run the whole effect for it, from your first line to the reveal, before you allow another draw.
- Write down any card that made you stumble, and rehearse that card again the next day.
- Draw 2 or 3 cards when the effect uses several, so your handling meets combinations you would never pick.
- Say the patter out loud each time. A different card changes what your lines have to do.
A trick that only works for your favorite card isn't finished.
